I plugged this a while back, but it’s worth mentioning again. The Ok Go! video to their song, A Million Ways to be Free, is surely the coolest damn clip ever made. How they got four musicians to remember the routine is beyond me. And how they danced it all so well is even more impressive. Check it out. Candy is a new film starring Heath Ledger, Abbie Cornish and Geoffery Rush amongst others. It opens nationally on May 25th. According to the press release, ‘Cornish delivers a fearless portrayal of a young artist whose lust for life takes her to the edge of sanity’. It all sounds very cool and we have ten double passes to give away to random emailers nationwide to attend the sneak previews at participating cinemas on the weekend of 19-21 May. Ok, there are some wickedly bizarre figurines up on the Funkbuilders website amongst other equally twisted and creative work. The Iron Giants – Battle for Ultimate Supremacy, which opens at Revolver Upstairs on Melbourne’s bustling Chapel Street this Friday night, looks great as well. Some of the city’s finest aerosol artists have been given two canvasses and six coloured Molotow Premium spraycans with which to create a masterpiece. Meanwhile, AM Eyewear, Material Boy and Scwppe – three of the hottest fashion brands around – are having a sale this Saturday on the rooftop of 94 Oxford Street, Darlinghurst. Crimea X is the coming together of two offbeat, disparate characters, DJ Rocca (Ajello, Super Sonic Lovers, Maffia Sound System) and Jukka Reverberi from 90s Italian glam cult rockers, Giardini di Mirò, who have often have been compared with the sound of Mogwai, Arab Strap, and Godspeed You! We used to depend on sundials back in the day, but now there are multiple ways to tell the time. And Tokyo Flash has just invented another one. Based on LED technology, these watches are not only stylish but futuristic and wildly innovative. They even have a watch from minimalist designer Naoto Fukasawa that is more than just your basic timepiece. The Tokyo Flash site says that their watches are supposed to ‘resemble the various moods of a human’, and they’re definitely an attention grabber. These are watches to take us right through to the 22nd century.
Simple, colorful and somewhat esoteric, I really dig the work of New York illustrator, Rich Tu, a new SVA graduate student. It was something else to see his finely textured images blown up to poster size and beautifully displayed at the recent SVA student show. Read more

Sufjan Stevens creates autistic music for introverts — soft, shy, naive, full of shadows, windows, and insecurities. Yet it all sounds slightly forced, his enigmatic songwriting as comforting as it is unsettling.
If you ever happen to find yourself riding across the mid-west on horseback with an iPod jangling about in your holster, be sure to let Calexico soundtrack the experience. They’re cleverly fusing a range of genres, mixing some good old country with US indie, a bit of jazz and even, in 2003’s Feast of Wire, some smatterings of electronica. Lead singer Joey Burns gives a healthy amount of cowboy twang and the soaring orchestral background and sweet country guitar licks add a real atmosphere to the music.

I love this track by London based rock group, Scanners, which is off their latest album, Submarine. Having toured with acts such as The Horrors, The Wedding Present, The Charlatans, Electric Six, and Juliette & The Licks, Scanners could well blow up in 2010. Figuratively speaking, not literally. No, that wouldn’t be fun.
Charlie Immer’s pastel-pallete sometimes obfuscates the gory violence in his surreal images. At other times, it heightens the gut-wrenching and visceral effect of his work. Read more
