DJ Kicks
The DJ Kicks series has been rolling along now for more than ten years and in the process has produced a string of classic, upbeat mixes taking in everything from house, to electro-pop, drum n’ bass and dub. According to Wikipedia (and where the hell would we be without that resource!), ‘it started out in 1995 (with C.J Bolland’s release) as a compilation of electronic DJ club-style mixes in the techno or house genres, with the then novel twist of being targeted to a home listening audience. Soon afterwards, both the choice of compilers and the genres included were expanded’. It rocks and thanks to Inertia we have one pack of ten CDs to give away to a random emailer to celebrate the release of the 25th album in the ik7 series – by DJ Annie. The mixes included in the prize pack are Truby Trio, Thievery Corporation, Nightmares on Wax, Andrea Parkers, Smith & Mighty, Chicken Lips, Tiga, Carl Craig, Stereo MCs and The Glimmers. Yes we take bribes, especially things that make you go ‘hmmmm’.

There’s something magic about being in the same space as those performing at the very height of their field. The Australian Chamber Orchestra have just kicked off their Great Romantics national tour and it was a treat to see them live in Newcastle, Australia for their first show. I’m no chamber orchestra aficionado, but I know good music when I hear it. And the tones played by lead violinist Richard Tognetti are as sweet as you could hope to hear. Can’t hurt having a 1743 Guarneri del Gesù violin under the chin. A tour worth checking out.

Sufjan Stevens creates autistic music for introverts — soft, shy, naive, full of shadows, windows, and insecurities. Yet it all sounds slightly forced, his enigmatic songwriting as comforting as it is unsettling.
Listening to Mum’s fourth album — Go Go Smear the Poison Ivy — for the first time, I was awash with sentimentalism. Amidst carnival trumpets and burlesque beats, there’s a sense of this being a bohemian rhapsody. Perhaps it’s the mix of cello and brass with experimental electronica. Or maybe it’s just the soft vocals that cascade over playful, imaginative sounds. Whatever it is, it’s totally brilliant. [see also Sigur Ros' Heima]
