Interview with Shayne Carter, frontman of New Zealand band, Dimmer, and formerly of seminal guitar pop group, Straitjacket Fits, on his compilation retrospective, It All Looks The Same At Night. Q: Do you consciously view each new Dimmer recording as an opportunity to break away from the sound of the previous one? A: ‘I don’t know if it does jump around stylistically. It all kinda makes sense to me. With everything under the Dimmer umbrella — whether it’s the records, the videos, the photos, or the artwork — I’ve always been really conscious of projecting a definite vibe where it all ties into itself. The sign of being a mediocre or bad musician is when you don’t know who or what you are and what it is you’re trying to do — and there’s countless examples of people like that. But if you don’t know, then no one else is going to believe you. So it is more a case of write the tune and find a way to make it work’.

The project of creative technologist, Casey Pugh, this full length version of the George Lucas masterpiece was created from multiple 15 second segments recreated from the original movie and submitted by thousands of Star Wars fans, which were then spliced together by editor Aaron Valdez to form the final product. Genius, as both a commentary on contemporary pop culture trends (there are references to LEGO, stop motion, memes and the like) and on the power of tapping your audience for quality material.
Filmmaker creates LEGO stop motion to propose to girlfriend
Now, this is one for the ages: back in 2010, Atlanta film-maker Walter Thompson created a jaw-dropping LEGO stop motion to propose to Nealey Dozier, his girlfriend of four years. The video took 22 hours of shooting and some 2,600 pictures to splice together, a small sacrifice to pay for years of happiness together. Right? Right! Oh, and she said yes. Bonus.

Robert Montgomery is a London-based artist, or maybe a poet, who hijacks billboards, empty ad spaces on the streets and backlit metro lights with his words of wisdoms. Having originally sprung from the Shaky Isles (otherwise known as New Zealand), I can appreciate the humour in the New Zealand cartoon series, Bro Town, the first homegrown animated series to screen during local prime time. It’s simply brilliant, a real play on the ‘thuck’ accent and small town ways of our Kiwi brethren.
Paintings from Nicholas Aoki’s new solo exhibition, Goodnight; Sweet, Hearts blur two worlds — one of mortals and one of Gods, skeletons and creature spirits. The Toronto-based Aoki uses watercolors and acrylics to create rich landscapes that he layers with the characters in this journey to death. And while the paintings contain a dark subject matter, they also contain flashes of light — a glowing full moon, say, or lamp posts helping guide the way.

Baltimore Mural by Josh Van Horne
My friend Josh Van Horne, a local Baltimore artist, did this amazing mural in our neighborhood that depicts the history of this warehouse-laden area.
This Powder Necklace features a pearlized Turbo Cinereus shell with tiny holes drilled into the bottom, filled with a sparkling silver-colored powder that when gently tapped, sprinkles a light dusting on the wearer’s chest. Designed by Stephanie Simek. Read more
