The third issue of Riot, the magazine that I’m the editor of, has just hit the stands here in Australia and it’s a mish-mash of pop culture snippets – a bit of music and fashion, a bit of illustration, photography and art. Riot looks at all that talent – emerging and otherwise – that lurks just below the surface of the mainstream. So, in this issue, there’s an illustration by Jillian Tamaki on the cover and interviews with Gary Baseman, Evah Fan, Sam Weber, Josh Cochran, Neil McFarlane, local pop group The Grates, Cat Power and Boards of Canada inside. There’s also a six-page curated section by Italian design studio, Fupete, an illustrated fashion shoot by Lulu Plastic Pirate and a comic by Tomer Hanuka. It’s all been lovingly designed by the creative folk at Qube Konstrukt and if you’re interested in finding out more, shoot me an email. I’ve got five copies of the latest issue to give away to random emailers with the name of someone they’d like to see featured in the mag in the body of the message.

The Phenomenal Handclap Band is a collection of musicians and artists from Lower Manhattan and Brooklyn who perform live as an eight-member powerhouse, creating an eye-popping spectacle more akin to a spiritual church revival than a rock show. While I’m definitely not into the whole Lord of the Rings thing, I’m convinced Tolkien stole his inspiration from Göreme, in Turkey’s central Cappadocia region. After a mammoth volcanic eruption around 2,000 years ago, the landscape eroded to form a series of valleys, filled with peculiar, phallic-shaped tufts that the locals call ‘fairy chimneys’. Early Christians hollowed out the tufts and turned them into houses, churches and monasteries. These days, most of them are still in use and a few have been converted into cute hotels and hostels. If you’re not too claustrophobic, I’d highly recommend doing the hobbit thing and spending a night in one.
Sufjan Stevens creates autistic music for introverts — soft, shy, naive, full of shadows, windows, and insecurities. Yet it all sounds slightly forced, his enigmatic songwriting as comforting as it is unsettling.
It looks like the New Rave movement is making a big comeback thanks to Carrie Mundane, designer of the UK-based fashion label, Cassette Playa. Read more
