Downbeat and full of glitchy beats and sound effects, Murcof has always been a challenging listen. Remembranza is no exception, crawling along, as it does, under the weight of a series of slow-moving synth lines which carry few melodies but instead create a sense of ambient discolour and stillness. The album cover art hints at rustic tones and shades of grey, and this is very much the sound palette that Remembranza works off. It’s a little too static in parts though, especially the first track — the appropriately titled ‘Recuerdos’, which meanders without any real direction or focus. Meanwhile, on a completely different plateau is the Slipknot 9.0 Live album, which finds Iowa’s finest in top form, cranking out a barrage of ear-shattering music to their hardcore fans. All the hits are here (‘Spit It Out’; ‘Wait & Bleed’), and a few of the misses, but generally this is as intense as you would expect from a band that have made a career out causing serious, serious whiplash.

Says Van She bassist and vocalist Matt Van Schie about the Bush Tetras track — Too Many Creeps — from 1982: ‘I LOOOVE this tune. It opens with a perfect snare roll, and then the counter bass and guitar rhythms make it so cool. The lyrics are even more valid today. They’re one of my favourite bands of all time, and so many people try to do what they did for real. What a time! I wish I was born back then in New York, hanging out with these kids. Ahhhh!!’
California’s Cerasoli:LeBasse Gallery has just moved to new digs on Washington Boulevard, Culver City. And to celebrate the re-launch they have an exhibition running featuring the work of Deth P Sun, Mari Inukai [above] and Melissa Haslam, amongst others. This inaugural exhibition, the aptly titled Blender, runs until November 1st.
His name is Marshall Ace Drummond, which makes his initials MAD. At just over 8 months old, you don’t need to be clucky to appreciate his outfits: from Baby Gap to Cheap Monday, and sometimes not much more than a cheeky grin. This bub oozes charisma and his clothes suit him to a tee (pun intended).
I don’t know a lot about The Sugars but I like what they do. Their sound is quite rockabilly but quite modern — like White Stripes. They put out a couple of indie singles and I’d really like to find some time to work with them.
New York-based illustrator and sometime Lost At E Minor contributor, Fernanda Cohen, has just finished a line of four tees for The Gap as part of the (RED) campaign. The t shirts will be coming out this fall. Read more
