We were bombarded with entries for the first Joachim Baan giveaway which we ran a few weeks back so we’re pleased to have another copy of For As Long As I Can’t Remember – a limited edition (1000 copies), perfect bound, full colour collection of Baan’s elegant photography – to offer to a random emailer with a short two line poem on why they should get it in the body copy of the message. Ok, onto arty things and there’s some great work up on Matthew Chapman’s website. He’s an Australian illustrator with a good eye for capturing those surreal moments that nearly slip between the cracks. There’s also some hot photographic work at the New York-based Peter Sutherland’s site and some cool tees amongst other assorted fashion paraphernalia at Wowch. Meanwhile, aspiring social butterflies and fashionistas should check out the Australian-based weekly email newsletter, 2 Threads, which features the cream of the emerging design community amongst a series of red hot event pics. Always a fun read. As is the Semi-Permanent book. Details were released this week about this year’s speakers for the annual DIK run event and it looks like it’ll be a belter with Paul Pope, Anyhow, and Joshua Davis all confirmed.

Star Wars Uncut: a fully crowdsourced version of Episode IV
The project of creative technologist, Casey Pugh, this full length version of the George Lucas masterpiece was created from multiple 15 second segments recreated from the original movie and submitted by thousands of Star Wars fans, which were then spliced together by editor Aaron Valdez to form the final product. Genius, as both a commentary on contemporary pop culture trends (there are references to LEGO, stop motion, memes and the like) and on the power of tapping your audience for quality material.
Filmmaker creates LEGO stop motion to propose to girlfriend
Now, this is one for the ages: back in 2010, Atlanta film-maker Walter Thompson created a jaw-dropping LEGO stop motion to propose to Nealey Dozier, his girlfriend of four years. The video took 22 hours of shooting and some 2,600 pictures to splice together, a small sacrifice to pay for years of happiness together. Right? Right! Oh, and she said yes. Bonus.

We’re smitten (kitten) by the look of the new Standard Hotels’ Pendleton blankets, which were designed by the artists Geoff McFetridge and Chris Johanson. Composed of 82 per cent pure virgin wool and 18 per cent cotton, only 40 of each blanket design have been made. Read more

A culmination of nearly four years of writing and recording, Omaha quintet, The Faint are preparing to release their fifth album, Fasciinatiion, on August 5 on the band’s own newly-formed label, blank.wav. Working without any time constraints, the songs went through many recorded incarnations before finding their final forms. The result is the best album in the band’s career, a record that is the purest culmination of The Faint’s brilliant musical instincts, ideas and aesthetic, with each member contributing equally to its creation.
The Virtual Shoe Museum was initiated by Liza Snook in 2004. Once the idea was born, a long search began for designers, photographers and publishers connected to shoes. New friendships developed and their mailbox filled with loads of material on fantastic shoes, art and design on shoes. The Shoe featured above is the Electric Light Shoe by Strawberry Frog.

Italian brand Brionvega has resurrected the classy Radiofonografio piece first created in 1965. The updated version is just like the original turntable/radio unit, but also has a CD/DVD player.

Sometime in 2010, the folks behind Dirty Dishes had the slightly silly idea of using cheeky vintage photos and putting them on dinner plates. After doing lots of research, talking to lots of people, and receiving loads of positive feedback, they wondered if this idea was so silly after all. And thus Dirty Dishes was born. Read more
