We were bombarded with entries for the first Joachim Baan giveaway which we ran a few weeks back so we’re pleased to have another copy of For As Long As I Can’t Remember – a limited edition (1000 copies), perfect bound, full colour collection of Baan’s elegant photography – to offer to a random emailer with a short two line poem on why they should get it in the body copy of the message. Ok, onto arty things and there’s some great work up on Matthew Chapman’s website. He’s an Australian illustrator with a good eye for capturing those surreal moments that nearly slip between the cracks. There’s also some hot photographic work at the New York-based Peter Sutherland’s site and some cool tees amongst other assorted fashion paraphernalia at Wowch. Meanwhile, aspiring social butterflies and fashionistas should check out the Australian-based weekly email newsletter, 2 Threads, which features the cream of the emerging design community amongst a series of red hot event pics. Always a fun read. As is the Semi-Permanent book. Details were released this week about this year’s speakers for the annual DIK run event and it looks like it’ll be a belter with Paul Pope, Anyhow, and Joshua Davis all confirmed.

Crimea X is the coming together of two offbeat, disparate characters, DJ Rocca (Ajello, Super Sonic Lovers, Maffia Sound System) and Jukka Reverberi from 90s Italian glam cult rockers, Giardini di Mirò, who have often have been compared with the sound of Mogwai, Arab Strap, and Godspeed You! Black Emperor. We asked them about their favourite music and they started with The Smiths song, Ask [listen below] ‘I saw them playing live on Italian TV. Born in Seoul Korea, but now working out of Los Angeles, Ramis Kim creates mixed media pieces which explore idealized childhood memories and invented narratives in imagined landscapes. An MFA graduate from Cal Arts in Valencia, Kim paints film and TV backgrounds when not creating her own art. Her work will be seen in a group show of Little Paper Plane artists, curated by Kelly Lynn Jones at Tinlark Gallery opening September 13. Read more
Paintings from Nicholas Aoki’s new solo exhibition, Goodnight; Sweet, Hearts blur two worlds — one of mortals and one of Gods, skeletons and creature spirits. The Toronto-based Aoki uses watercolors and acrylics to create rich landscapes that he layers with the characters in this journey to death. And while the paintings contain a dark subject matter, they also contain flashes of light — a glowing full moon, say, or lamp posts helping guide the way.
Australian-born creative, Marc Newson, is considered to be one of the most influential designers of the past few decades. Having originally studied jewellery and sculpture at Sydney College of the Arts, ‘he started experimenting with furniture design as a student and, after graduating in 1984, was awarded a grant from the Australian Crafts Council, and staged an exhibition — featuring the Lockheed Lounge — at the Roslyn Oxley Gallery in Sydney’. The Los Angeles musician, Ariana Delawari — aka Lion of Panjshir — is half Afghan and half Sicilian and makes wonderfully enlightened weirdo folk rock. I hope she takes that as a compliment! Her music is delicate and powerful and she is a pure artist. Everything she does has that magic light in it. She made her new album partially in Afghanistan, and many of the lyrics deal with the continued oppression of people’s liberties by the Taliban.
