Art / Somehow now

If only life was like a movie. An expensive, surreal epic in which the outcome is as predetermined and saccharine sweet as a Hollywood blockbuster and all the supporting roles are played with the grace and integrity befitting of those desperately wanting to climb the steep celluloid pecking order. Roll up, roll up for the casting couch of fate. Though I’ve already filled most of the main roles. Drew Barrymore will play the love interest, Robin Williams the wise confidante and my part will be handled by either George Clooney or Corey Haim, pending on who comes cheaper and with fewer hang-ups. I can see it all unfolding as I type. There’s the dramatic opening scene where Barrymore, aghast at Liv Tyler’s apparent infatuation with me, attacks her violently and without warning with a plush ET doll. Then there’s the tear-jerking moment where I rescue a drowning child from a burning fire (hey, this my film and I can do what I like!) only to discover a sickly stray dog is still inside. Exhausted, I rip off my shirt - revealing a rippling six-pack and a devastating set of pectoral muscles - and dash back inside. Fearless, breathless … without peer. Stop! Stop! Roll the credits right there. Yup, that’s about as good a time as any to get out of this damn adventure. [painting by Dane Lovett]

Lost At E Minor: Music, illustration, art, photography - from Australia and beyond » Brave worlds said | 22 August, 2006

[…] Yup, safari suits are hot right now. I know this because in Byron Bay recently I spotted five of them hanging in the town’s hippest retro clothing store, just waiting for a fashion savvy bohemian to sweep the rasta locks from his eyes and try them on. Of course this all extends to the art world too. What really is original these days? Is it merely clever bastardisation? And does it involve whips? The mind boggles. As it does at the wonderfully creative work of artist Joe Sorren. His website has just been updated with a whole range of new projects, his lush and surreal storybook images as unsettling as they are compelling. [see also Melissa Mejia Rizik, Dane Lovett] […]

So Clooney is thinking about running for office? I know he’s pretty politically active, but with his party past I can’t see him going far.

You hear the words ‘unique’ and ‘original’ thrown around quite a lot these days. I use them myself regularly. But every now and then you find an artist who truly deserves those terms to be used in relation to their work. Travis Louie is one such artist. Read more

These very sweet folks from Seattle supported Broken Social Scene on our last American dates of the Spirit IF tour. Although they haven’t quite hit their stride as a live outfit, the tunes from songwriter Grant Olsen have some very lovely moments that fall somewhere between Velvet Underground and The Everly Brothers. I think Arthur and Yu could take over from where Grandaddy left off, though with better songs. No offense to Grandaddy.

The owners are already living in their new abode with their two very happy children. The structure is maintenance-free and earthquake proof, and is full of soothing greenery and smooth, rounded surfaces. Read more
