Sounding a little like a female version of Jethro Tull, Faun Fables are, in fact, a two-piece gothic folk group who – on Family Album – combine wonderful vocal harmonies with a slightly off-kilter instrumental accompaniment to create a lush and lyrically rich album. Part chanting; part sung; part poetry; part complete belligerence, this is a complicated and challenging album which never settles. Instead each song twists and turns through a handful of rhythms, tempo changes and chord progressions, captivating at times, but often getting lost in its own winding maze. It certainly breaks valiantly away from the rather uninspiring folk tradition – it’s neither slickly polished nor does it slip into saccharine sweet sentiment. There’s a very dark undercurrent that eats away at the friendly acoustic arrangements. Not recommended for small children. Or animals.

Star Wars Uncut: a fully crowdsourced version of Episode IV
The project of creative technologist, Casey Pugh, this full length version of the George Lucas masterpiece was created from multiple 15 second segments recreated from the original movie and submitted by thousands of Star Wars fans, which were then spliced together by editor Aaron Valdez to form the final product. Genius, as both a commentary on contemporary pop culture trends (there are references to LEGO, stop motion, memes and the like) and on the power of tapping your audience for quality material.
Filmmaker creates LEGO stop motion to propose to girlfriend
Now, this is one for the ages: back in 2010, Atlanta film-maker Walter Thompson created a jaw-dropping LEGO stop motion to propose to Nealey Dozier, his girlfriend of four years. The video took 22 hours of shooting and some 2,600 pictures to splice together, a small sacrifice to pay for years of happiness together. Right? Right! Oh, and she said yes. Bonus.

Redwood artist Ken Keirns has a thing for monkeys. That much is obvious enough. His site is crawling with them, in his toys, illustrations, and paintings. By his own admission, he ‘likes painting women and monkeys, with a sense of humor’. And so he does. Very, very well.

When you first hear William Elliot Whitmore’s voice, it’s hard to believe he isn’t a grizzled old man. The baritone-voiced one-man-band does rousing bar room ballads on the banjo and guitar that are sure to send shivers down your spine. On closer listen, Whitmore’s voice does seem slightly affected. But like Tom Waits before him, his voice is likely to age like a good scotch.
