Mr Jeff Buckley
Although they hardly knew each other, the impact that Tim Buckley had on his son Jeff’s music is indisputable. Tim crafted meticulous, yearning songs that tapped deep into minor key sentiments and captured poetically the sense of mental and physical unease that he felt with the world. Jeff Buckley was equally as restless - a tortured soul whose most direct means of expression came in the form of epic falsetto driven songs that arched melodically through great highs and lows. This tribute album from some of the alt-music world’s brightest luminaries is a fitting tribute to a legacy which still carries on in the output of many of those featured here – Sufjan Stevens, Micah P Hinson, The Earlies and others. Genius, as both a commentary on contemporary pop culture trends (there are references to LEGO, stop motion, memes and the like) and on the power of tapping your audience for quality material.
Filmmaker creates LEGO stop motion to propose to girlfriend
Now, this is one for the ages: back in 2010, Atlanta film-maker Walter Thompson created a jaw-dropping LEGO stop motion to propose to Nealey Dozier, his girlfriend of four years. The video took 22 hours of shooting and some 2,600 pictures to splice together, a small sacrifice to pay for years of happiness together. Right? Right! Oh, and she said yes. Bonus.

I’m currently living in a windowless room in a warehouse space that doesn’t have any sound insulation from the rest of the apartment. I can hear EVERYTHING. I also don’t have a bed. I need one of these I-gloobox things.
Sparks’ album Kimono My House is a demented mix of hard rock, pop, glam, new wave, and baroque pop. Why this record never caught on in the States I’ll never know. The songs will get stuck in your head and prevent you from sleeping. Oh yeah, and the keyboard player has a nice mustache too, as evidenced by this track above — This Town Ain’t Big Enough.

These very sweet folks from Seattle supported Broken Social Scene on our last American dates of the Spirit IF tour. Although they haven’t quite hit their stride as a live outfit, the tunes from songwriter Grant Olsen have some very lovely moments that fall somewhere between Velvet Underground and The Everly Brothers. I think Arthur and Yu could take over from where Grandaddy left off, though with better songs. No offense to Grandaddy.
