Illustration / True colours
I travel light. choose to do so because I hate clutter of any kind. Physical, mental, emotional … spare me the excess baggage. But allow me to wallow in it from time to time. Heck, I’m only human. Where others seek material ‘wellness’, I’m desperately trying to get rid of whatever meagre assets I’ve accumulated. Give me a small canvas bag and a good sense of direction any day. Which reminds me of an interview I did recently with American singer-songwriter Devendra Barnhart. I asked him when he was at his happiest and he responded, ‘When I am clear’. It would seem that in this world of sensory overload, where shapes, colours, noises, and textures bombard us every day with relentless intensity, clarity lies right at the front doorstep to happiness. A clear mind, a clear slate, the ability to be flexible … it’s a pretty good realm to aspire to. Though we all have our moments. Note to self: check for a double up of Leonard Cohen’s Greatest Hits. I have a feeling I bought a second copy one day under the wash of a self-pitying melancholic haze. Cripes he’s a mopey bugger. [illustration by Yuko Shimizu]
