A treat for ya ears
Animal Collective create music that challenges you to think differently about your immediate surrounds. It’s a big statement, I know, but really, when you listen to the warm electro-pop which saturates this album, it’s surprisingly easy to detach yourself from the immediacy of the moment and instead be transported front and centre to the polite mosh of one of their New York gigs. Feels follows on from where last year’s Sung Tongs left off. It’s an album borne of experiences and emotions, each song dragged kicking and screaming from the deepest recesses of the idea well and molded with intricate precision by producer Scott Colbourne. This is a very ‘real’ album, full of leftfield melodic tangents and unexpected instrumental touches, every bit as commanding as we’ve come to expect.

Crimea X is the coming together of two offbeat, disparate characters, DJ Rocca (Ajello, Super Sonic Lovers, Maffia Sound System) and Jukka Reverberi from 90s Italian glam cult rockers, Giardini di Mirò, who have often have been compared with the sound of Mogwai, Arab Strap, and Godspeed You! Black Emperor. We asked them about their favourite music and they started with The Smiths song, Ask [listen below] ‘I saw them playing live on Italian TV. On my recent visit to Barcelona, my love for Animal Farm led me to the Plaça de Geroge Orwell. There I discovered Oviso. The tiny café features hand painted walls and low wooden benches, where inhabitants enjoy great coffee for €1 and discuss music, beer, photography and the hordes of tourists that bustle just beyond the quiet square.
Heavily influenced by music and film, the design team at Conquer Gear showcases their tees not as clothes, but indubitably as limited edition art pieces. That said, I wonder what film or music piece inspired Mr. Owl picture t shirt [below]? Led Zeppelin came to mind, but then so did Joni Mitchell!. Scanners’ new single Salvation
I love this track by London based rock group, Scanners, which is off their latest album, Submarine. Having toured with acts such as The Horrors, The Wedding Present, The Charlatans, Electric Six, and Juliette & The Licks, Scanners could well blow up in 2010. Figuratively speaking, not literally. No, that wouldn’t be fun.
